Such players carry out their function of music reproduction through the following steps:

• The tape is collected on two reels, the one on the right is dedicated to rewinding the tape, the one on the left contains the tape to be unwound. It slides onto a head, which in turn receives the magnetic signal imprinted on the tape and converts it into an electrical signal that will give rise to sound.
• Another head allows the sound to be recorded on the tape.

The device needs regular maintenance because the tape is a magnetic medium that comes into physical contact with the head and other metal parts of the mechanism. The cartridges need to be cleaned with some regularity; in addition, the metal components may require demagnetization.
